Stinging and itchy labia - why it happens and what to do about it
A question was recently asked in our chat: "What's the problem if it keeps itching and burning down there?" First of all, no woman on this planet should have to walk around with itchy and burning labia - regardless of age! We understand how frustrating it can be to experience these symptoms without knowing what's behind them. That's why we want to shed light on some of the most common causes of burning and itching labia, and what you can do to relieve the discomfort.
COMMON CAUSES OF BURNING AND ITCHING IN THE LABIA
1. Dry and fragile mucous membranes - not just for women in menopause
Many people think that dry mucous membranes only affect women after the menopause, but the fact is that all women can experience it. The causes can be anything from hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle to stress or side effects of certain medications. When mucous membranes are dry, the skin becomes more sensitive and prone to both irritation and infections.
A study published in the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease showed that women with dry mucous membranes have a higher risk of developing fungal infections, which in turn exacerbates the symptoms of intense itching and burning. That's why it's important to restore moisture balance to reduce both discomfort and the risk of future problems. A moisturising and nourishing gel can work wonders here! VagiVital AktivGel alternative that quickly moisturises and rebuilds the mucous membranes, improving resistance to both dryness and recurring infections.
2. Fungal infections - when the itching becomes unbearable
Almost all women will be affected by a yeast infection at some point in their lives. The typical symptoms are a burning sensation, intense itching and white, cloudy discharge. Fungi thrive when the environment in the genital area is disturbed - for example, by dry mucous membranes, tight clothing or after antibiotic treatment. If you recognise these symptoms, it's important to treat the fungal infection first. But to prevent it from happening again, make sure you regularly moisturise with a product like VagiVital AktivGel to strengthen the mucous membranes and create an environment where the fungus has a harder time getting a foothold.

3. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) - when the balance is disturbed
Have you noticed that your vagina is starting to smell bad, itch and sting? In that case, it could be a sign of bacterial vaginosis. BV occurs when the balance between good and bad bacteria in the genital area is disturbed, which can be caused by anything from excessive washing to changes in the pH value. Unlike fungal infections, BV often causes a distinct fishy smell and thin, greyish discharge.
4. Improper intimate care - stop using soap!
A common mistake is to use regular soap to wash your genitals. A MILD intimate soap is still a soap, and can actually make things worse. Soap can dry out and irritate the already sensitive skin around the labia. If you feel like you're washing to get rid of the itch - stop right now! Instead, choose a 100% soap-free and pH-balanced cleanser like VagiVital Moisturising Cleanser It gently cleanses without drying and helps you maintain a healthy moisture balance.
5. Contact allergy - it's more common than you think
Sometimes itching and burning can be caused by something as simple as an allergic reaction. Perfumed sanitary towels, detergents or synthetic materials in your underwear can create a localised irritation that causes the skin to react. Try switching to hypoallergenic and unscented products, and avoid tight clothing that makes you hot and sweaty.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET RID OF SWEATING AND ITCHING?
🌺 Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!
Start using VagiVital AktivGel regularly. The gel restores the moisture balance, relieves dryness and provides a stronger mucous membrane that resists both irritation and infections.
🌺 Always use a mild cleanser
Skip the soap and try VagiVital Moisturising Cleanser intimate wash instead, which is based on AktivGel with the same moisturising formula that cleanses while providing maximum moisture.
🌺 Give your labia some air!
Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid tight trousers. It is important that the skin is allowed to breathe and is not exposed to unnecessary heat and friction.
🌺 Be careful with intimate shaving
Shaving or waxing can easily cause small cuts and irritations in the sensitive skin around the labia. If you want to shave, you should use a new, clean razor and avoid shaving too often.
