Bacterial vaginosis vs. yeast infection: What's the difference?

While summer is great, it also means an increased risk of unpleasant genital problems for many women. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections are two of the most common problems. But how do you know which is which, and why is summer a time when more women are affected?

WHY IS SUMMER A HIGH-RISK PERIOD?

During the summer, we are exposed to several factors that can disrupt the balance of the genital area. Damp swimwear, increased sweating and changing hygiene habits can all contribute to changes in the genital environment. Changing hygiene practices might mean showering more often and using different types of soap or cleaning products. Using stronger soaps can disrupt the natural pH balance in the genital area, making it easier for both fungi and harmful bacteria to grow. This creates a perfect breeding ground for both BV and yeast infections. So make sure you always have our moisturising intimate wash V Cleanser in your toiletry bag ❤️

SYMPTOMS OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

🌸 Malodorous discharge: Strong, fishy odour that often gets worse after intercourse.

🌸 Grey-white discharge: Discharge is often thinner than normal and can be grey-white in colour.

🌸 Mild irritation: Some women experience mild itching or irritation, but this is not always the case.

SYMPTOMS OF A YEAST INFECTION

🌸 Intense itching: One of the most prominent symptoms is severe itching in the lower abdomen.

🌸 Thick, white discharge: Discharge often has the consistency of cottage cheese.

🌸 Redness and swelling: The skin around the vagina can become red and swollen, and sometimes there is pain during urination or intercourse.

HOW CAN YOU TELL WHAT YOU HAVE?

It can be difficult to tell the difference between bacterial vaginosis and a yeast infection based on symptoms alone, as they can overlap. In addition, some women may have a dual diagnosis, i.e. both bacterial vaginosis and a yeast infection at the same time. In this case, one symptom may be hidden behind the other, which makes it even more important to find out the cause of the symptoms before treating them. Incorrect treatment, such as treating for yeast without having it, can exacerbate problems and further disrupt the natural balance.

A good first step is to use our VagiVital VS self-test for bacterial vaginosis. With this test, you can easily and quickly find out if you're suffering from bacterial vaginosis, all in the comfort of your own home.

TREATMENT OF YEAST INFECTIONS

Several over-the-counter treatments for yeast infections are available in pharmacies. However, it's important to follow the instructions carefully and to continue treatment, even if the symptoms disappear earlier. If the infection recurs frequently, you should consult a doctor for further examination.

TIPS FOR PREVENTING BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS AND YEAST INFECTIONS IN SUMMER

🌸 Change your swimwear quickly: Avoid sitting too long in damp swimwear.

🌸 Wear underwear that is breathable: Cotton underwear helps to keep the area dry.

🌸 Avoid harsh soap products: Use mild, unscented products for intimate hygiene.

🌸 Dry yourself properly: Make sure you're completely dry after showering or bathing before getting dressed.
