pH Balance? Vaginal Microbiome? Why Is Everyone Talking About This?

So, here’s the thing—I’m obsessed with skincare. I know exactly what acids to use for breakouts, how to protect my skin barrier, and why moisturizer is a non-negotiable (team dewy over matte, always).

But you know what I didn’t know? Your vulva has a skin barrier too—and it’s called the vaginal microbiome. And just like your face, it has a pH balance that keeps everything in check. Why did no one tell us this?!

What Even Is a Vaginal Microbiome?

Think of your vaginal microbiome like your gut or skin—it’s a whole ecosystem of good bacteria that work together to:

  •  Keep things hydrated & healthy

  • Fight off bad bacteria that can cause infections

  • Maintain the perfect pH balance (aka not too acidic, not too basic—just right!)

When your microbiome is thriving, you don’t even think about it. But when it’s off? That’s when irritation, infections, and weird odors happen.

How Do You Mess It Up? (Without Even Realizing It)

Before my little research spiral, I had no clue that everyday things can wreck your vaginal balance:

  • Using body wash or scented soap “down there” (It strips away good bacteria & dries out your skin)

  • Douching (please don’t) (It’s like setting your microbiome on fire—unnecessary & harmful)

  • Wearing tight, synthetic underwear 24/7 (Traps moisture = bacteria paradise)

  • Too many bubble baths or fragranced wipes (Fun? Yes. Good for your vulva? Nope.)

Stress & diet (Yep, even being overwhelmed can throw off your pH. Love that for us. 🙃)

So, How Do You Keep Things Balanced?

Turns out, less is more when it comes to intimate care. Here’s what actually helps:

  • Switch to a pH-balanced, fragrance-free cleanser like VagiVital’s V Cleanser (because your vulva deserves better than body wash)

  • Wear breathable fabrics (cotton undies FTW)

  • Drink water & eat probiotic-rich foods (your gut & vagina are lowkey besties)

  • Avoid unnecessary products (if it smells like a flower shop, it’s probably not good for you)

Final Thoughts: My Microbiome & I Are Now Besties

I can’t believe I went 22 years without knowing my vulva had a whole ecosystem to protect. But honestly? Learning about this has made me way more in tune with my body—and now, keeping things balanced is just part of my self-care routine.

So if you, like me, had no idea that your vaginal health is just as important as your skincare… congrats, we’re learning together.
